Also, there are 2-3 other non-working rats called soldiers, who protect the colony when there is such a necessity. The rest of the colony are workers that dig the tunnels and find food. These animals have up to 5 litters a year.

This is the only known mammal that lives in a social system consisting of 20-300 individuals. Individuals are divided into classes of hierarchy amongst the groups. The hierarchy class consists of one dominant breeding female and 1-3 dominant breeding males.
