Various guinea pig breeds are commonly referred to as rodents; a baby can fit comfortably into a palm.
Animals of Peruvian type have long hair with rosettes. Hair of these rodents may grow to 20 inches. The Texel is a long haired Teddy Bear variation. Texels’ coat is identical to the Teddy’s, however the Texel’s coat can grow to four inches in length. If you want to keep your cavy cleaner and happier periodic haircuts will be rather necessary. Cavies’ coat comes in white, black, brown, blonde, lilac, agouti, red, blue and other colors which can be combined with white patterns and markings. Patterns consist of dalmatian, himalayan, dutch, roan, tortoiseshell and calico colors.

There are several types of these animals. Shorthair rodents have the easiest hair to care for, because their coat is non-mating and naturally repels dirt. These animals’ hair measures 1 inch or less and lays flat. Abyssinians have fur that is 2 inches in length and forms rosettes on the body. Silkies or “Shelties” have a long, soft, silky hair which grows 8-10 inches in length. They have to be groomed frequently. Teddy Bears’ or “teddy’s” coat is wiry, short and easy to care for.
