To get an overview of common guinea pig diseases, talk to a breeder; he may show you photos of visible symptoms. Before buying a cavy, learn about possible health problems which these animals can have. They can have a skin illness that is called “ringworm.” It is a skin infection caused by a fungus similar to the one that causes athlete's foot in people. It causes shedding on the face, nose and ears. The condition is characterized by the flaky skin and the affected areas may extend along the top side of the trunk. These animals can also have diarrhea, difficulty in breathing, hair loss, and lack of activity and appetite. They are also susceptible to respiratory viruses. Catching one virus can be fatal for the animal. To get an overview of common guinea pig diseases, talk to a breeder; he may show you photos of visible symptoms.
