Guinea Pig Breeder

A guinea pig breeder may have a picture of his favorite or a photo of every one; there are numerous reasons, chief among them is record-keeping. Domestication of these animals took place in South America where the natives used cavies as a source of food and it is still considered a delicacy today. These animals are large for rodents. Their weight ranges between 1 and 3 pounds. They grow to 10-15 inches long. Their life span ranges from five to eight years. Cavies are rather clever animals and can even be trained. The potty training of these animals is rather easy, because they consider the cage a safe place and will litter in the familiar territory. The animals usually conceal illness, because it’s a survival mechanism in the wild, where a predator would pick off a lagging animal. These rodents have good eye sight. Cavies come in many varieties. Hair and color composition are the main differences in these varieties. The most common varieties found in pet stores are the English Short Hair. These are very intelligent animals and they are also very social. They are plant eaters. In the wild, when a herd feeds, one animal assumes the duty of a guard. These animals are so intelligent they even can be trained to perform easy tricks, but only when food is involved and with many repetitions. These cute little animals are rather vocal and produce a great deal of different sounds. A guinea pig breeder may have a picture of his favorite or a photo of every one; there are numerous reasons, chief among them is record-keeping.
