It is very important to know that female cavy should be first bred before 7 months of age. If the first breeding is delayed, there may appear serious problems with delivery. Sometimes these problems may even be life-threatening. Males are able to breed at 34 month of age. Females are pregnant for 63 days. It is a rather large gestation period for rodents. The young are born relatively mature with open eyes and fully furred. They also have teeth and can walk about. The young begin to eat solid food when only 2 or 3 days old, though they nurse for 2 - 3 weeks.

Two males can easily live together if they are neutered and never in contact with females whereas the females would fight for rank. The highest rank earns the right to go wherever and whenever they want. The animal of lower rank defer to those of higher rank. Usually the two strongest females don’t get along and constantly fight. They should be separated to avoid high stress level in the cage. The young animals squeals loudly until they are fed.
