By the time the governments of Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, and Peru put restrictions on the hunting these animals it was too late. The population of these rodents decreased greatly. In 1910 Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, and Peru decreed laws, prohibited the hunting, trapping, and killing these animals, as well as prohibited selling their pelts.
